I just got into Berklee School of Music, which is in the back bay, up in boston. And I'm indescribably excited at the moment, and I feel a need to tell everyone I can.

Also, the best part is that it means I can keep playing airsoft in Massachusetts. Believe it or not, you, MAASF, were a significant factor in where I decided to go to school. So thank you guys, keep on rocking, see you on the battlefield.

Heh, one of the reasons I decided to go to Dartmouth instead of way out in Mass College of Liberal Arts (which forbids anything that so much as pretends to look like a weapon within 10,000 miles of campus).

Though I have yet to see whether that was a good decision...

Congratulations, glad you're sticking around.

So did you get a scholarship, or will you be in debt for the next life, unless you get a good score thing into a film. Then you'll have it paid off in 20 years. What was the audition like?

Spider car is cool too, it has 8 legs, and that would take quite a few IEDs to take down. Put a minigun in the back and you got a cool troop transport.

The bug helo is kinda cool how its ass swings down and forward to fire.

Now lets not forget that this thread is about Maestro getting into Berklee, which is no small feat for a musician these days. I'm with APW, I wanna hear about the audition process and such. Actually what instrument did you audition with I don't recall what you play haha

jmb91
01-31-2009, 08:12 PM
please tell me you auditioned on the electric ukulele

Maestro
01-31-2009, 08:31 PM
I play the violin, and the audition was hilarious. I got there and was called to my audition about 30 minutes early, and they gave me a room to warm up in for 20 minutes, and a set of 6 different 4 line sight reading pieces, and was told they'd pick two. All the people were ridiculously chill, which was awesome. After a little while, they brought me to an audition room, and had me play my prepared piece, which I had been working on forever so it wasn't too big of a deal. Then they had me pick one of the sight reading pieces, and I got almost to the end and the guy said "Ok, that's good, I know you can read." Then he played a 12 bar blues and told me to improv over it. That's all I remember, it's mostly all a blur.

Ravage
01-31-2009, 08:36 PM
thats pretty cool. I didnt even have to sight read at my audition for RIC. I did have a music theory exam though. Did they give you one of those?

Maestro
01-31-2009, 08:48 PM
Not that I remember, Berklee seems to get a lot of self-taught musicians, so I guess they skip theory in the audition.

Ravage
01-31-2009, 08:54 PM
Ah. Well I assume you'll end up having to take theory courses anyways. RIC is very classicaly oriented when it comes to training students and such so we all have to take 4 semesters of theory and sightsinging and ear training.

Maestro

Haha, my high school band teacher was excited when I told him I will be doing the berklee saxaphone weekend and some more private lessons over the summer. My friend is auditioning for berklee but he said he is just doing it to see if he could get in. He is a crazy guitarist. Number one or two high school jazz guitarist in RI.

Ravage
01-31-2009, 10:01 PM
I didn't even attempt berklee for a number of reasons such as lack of funds, not to mention i'm not much of a jazz guitarist and I've only been playing classical gutiar for 1 1/2 years or so so I doubt I would have had the skill to get in when it was audition time...

I have been thinking about trying to go to a conservatory once I finish here at RIC but thats not for a while so no sense worrying about it now.

Are you planning on doing anything with music APW?

Maestro
01-31-2009, 10:07 PM
Jazz is madness. I've tried to understand jazz theory before, it's just too complicated for me. That being said, people who can play it, play it well, and know what they're doing, are gods.

Yeah, a minor or a double major at URI, then a major in mechanical engineering and some other stuff like business. I've got time though, still a junior.

Agreed. I haven't even bothered with jazz theory yet but we do have jazz theory courses and as of this semester a jazz guitar teacher and I think I'm gonna give that a shot maybe next semester or the following, just to see what happens. Can't hurt to try to learn, eh?

Maestro
02-02-2009, 08:17 PM
Well, I took two classes at berklee over the summer, and both times stayed in the dorms, and had very different experiences both times. One time, I was in a pretty nice triple, it was right next to the street but it wasn't too noisy for me, it had it's own bathroom, and it was pretty excellent. The other time, the dorm I was in was a complete shit hole. It was falling apart, literally. So I guess, it all depends? I might end up staying in a friend's apartment instead, so it doesn't make a humongous difference to me.

Right, as it was denominated as a Muslim place of habitation . . .

Plus if it was AT Tufts, than its on campus, which means it's subject to the colleges rules anyways.
