View Full Version : Cyma AK47 full wood initial impressions
This is not a completely in depth review, more of, as I titled, an initial impression.
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a355/ubeswardog/014.jpg
History:
Over the last few years Cyma has truly stepped up their game. Years ago these guys, along with UTG, were the jokes of the airsoft world-as CA and ICS were in the beginning. Today, I can almost understand the craze over these cheaper alternatives to the old names of the old schoolers. Of course, this gun would never be able to touch a custom TM AK47 with a wood kit, but as I mentioned, it's a great alternative.
Ordering:
I ordered the AEG from ASGI for $180, and it arrived less than a week later. Great service as always, and I got shipping for free.
The boxzor opened!?:
The gun's externals are a pleasant sight, and a mighty nice feel when handled for the first time being used to fake wood AEG's. The wood is medium grade at best, it's no land force kit, but it is quite nice.
In stock form there is very little you can do to add on accessories as you would to an M4, but AK's just aren't meant for such customization- old, and tried and true.
The magazine is indeed metal. Many reviews have mentioned it is plastic, this is false with my model. It's subpar, but it'll do the job.
Performance/internal report:
I was shocked to see the Quality Control test sheet ASGI provided, claiming this baby is pumping exactly 457 fps with .2's!!
I read the Cyma AKM shot hot, and I was really hoping this thing would be in the 370-380 fps range with .25's to make her skirmishable out of the box.
With the great help of Sacslym, we downgraded the AEG friday night, placing an M110 in the gearbox. Inside the gearbox the spring is the equivalent to an M120, which being a commoner towards this specific spring throughout my career, this was quite the surprise!! The gearbox is well put together, and the gun has virtually no air loss to achieve such a feat.
After chronoing the AEG at RPC, the gun is still shooting very hot at 420 FPS with .25's. Another down grade is indeed required, sadly.
However, doing some bursts into the woods, this thing has phenomenal accuracy and range. The iron sights were dead on, which in some ways can eliminate the need for optics to gain superior targeting on the field-great for me, I like simple set-ups for the most part.
Recommendations:
Replace the stock battery with something more useful. This should be common knowledge in the airsoft world, but it's best to make it clear.
Prepare to downgrade!!!! Most of the fields in the Northeast are 400 fps with .25's, and P&L with 370. To make it skirmishable, she must be tampered with.
Pros and cons:
Pros-
Real Wood
Great accuracy
Great range
V3 gearbox- great for winter and heavy usage.
Light
Amazing price!
Cons-
Irrationally powered for a stock AEG
Ergonomically uncomfortable towards those who are used to AR-15's.
Mags get in way when in prone position
In conclusion I hold no qualms towards any player who seeks a nicely put together AK-47 that boast a fine gearbox, and just as nice externals for the price. Great for beginners, or project guns.
I give this baby a 8/10. Remember kids, DOWNGRADE!
More to follow, and questions welcome.

as far as selector switches go how tight is it? i mean is it one of those every once in awhile things or consistently after games?
It's a little finiky, requires a little more attention than an AR-15 or HK type selector switch, but its nothing that shall decide your fate in a fire fight.
Practice makes perfect...or damn close near perfect.

im really looking into one of these, did you get the CA042 or the CA036A? big difference, one comes stock shooting 400-450 other is 390-400
Thats the 042 because the 036 is an AKM not an AK-47.
Maestro

The 042 is the greatest gun ever, although I wish it had a scope mount. Mine is shooting a little less hot than Ubez's, at around 375 with .25s. If that's a lemon, it's the greatest lemon I've ever seen. Accessorizing it isn't really so necessary, I find, it shoots hot enough that I rarely have to use it CQB.
This is indeed the 042.
I'll downgrade this ASAP to get this ready for my last OP of the year, I'll be a crazy ass role player.....again.

They both come shooting 425+ plus out of the box with .25's. At least every one I've seen in the last 5 months.

so what you should do to it is
lighter spring
tightbore
9.6V batterie
correct?

As a fellow 042 owner, I agree with this review. I'm still trying to find someone to install my M100 for me, though. I haven't been able to skirmish with it yet.
And my selector switch is quite finicky. It jiggles around and often slips into semi-auto all by itself when I'm shooting on full auto.

Pretty much. It'll be quite a contender on the field upon modifying.

Pop the plastic cap off and tighten the philips head screw.

Wow thanks a lot that fixed it. I didn't even know that little plastic cap came off.

im fairly sure that the little circle nub thingy that pivots the selector switch can be popped off, and then the selector switch can be tightened or loosened from there.

LI POLY
correct?
Fixed.
Someone asked me this, and it changes some perception on this gun.
A Large 8.4 won't fit inside the stock. Of course I plan to use a lipo, but still something someone should know before purchasing this AEG.
Anyone else have this problem, or am I the retard out of the bunch?

It has a small connector, so I don't think they expect anyone to be able to fit a large battery in there. I have enough trouble squeezing a mini battery inside there.

sac uses admin, ITS SUPER EFFECTIVE! DAMIT! anyways raider, dont you need to have a gun rewired for a lypoly, or is this AK already wired for 1?
Maestro
11-12-2008, 04:48 PM
no rewiring is necessary, you just need a gun that can handle it, which this gun can. I ran a lipo out of mine for the last game at survival series, it shot damn fast, and so hard I actually accidentally ripped some skin off of longbow's hand. For advice on what not to do with a lipo, ask Frowny about his swordfish.
Respect the lipo, and she won't fuck you up.

daaaaaaaam there expensive! and would you reccomend a 11.1 or 7.4v lypo
Maestro
11-13-2008, 06:08 PM
11.1, and you can find relatively cheap ones without chargers. like here: http://www.airsoftpark.com/firefox-2300mah-111v-lipolymer-battery-p-246.html
LeeTagger
11-13-2008, 06:22 PM
yes, i knew about those, but i have no idea where to get chargers for them. kinda useless if you have a batterie w/o a charger.

Special.
Lets not make this into a Lipo discussion thread please.
Anymore questions, or comments, on the 042 itself are welcome.
unlocked...if I did that by accident, my bad.

I think I'm the one with that question on neasg.
Wouldn't a lipo just destroy an mpeg with the INSANE rpm?

what order would you reccomend i upgrade it because its not gonna happen all at once. im thinking gun and spring, then get the lypo and tightbore.

Basically. Downgrade it so it's usable, then put in the barrel and battery.
Good luck.

the cyma 042 is not an MPEG. Like I said in the beginning of the review, if you read, Cyma has really stepped their game- and in my book, on-par with other reputable airsoft brands.
With that, the Cyma's I've used (thanks to the Horsemen at numerous events) ran lipos with stock internals. Still running strong-no issues what so ever.

thanks for the help guys, and ubez gets 2 nice points 1 for now and another for that other kid in the gear selection forum.
Huh, sounds like a good deal. Medium grade wood doesn't bother me, AK47's were mass produced, they probably didn't even care how good the wood was in Russia. I might order one after I complete my SAW and MG36.
Are the internals 100% compatible with V3 parts? I know the older models have issues with compatibility.
SACSlym

Anything starting with and beyond the CM028 is fully TM compatible.

damit, now im thinking about how much of a clunker this would be in CQB and am sereously comcidering a CM035. anyone know what i would have to do to make one of those decent?
tightbore
lypo
motor????
gears?
second question, is the CM035 stock compatable with a lypo?
I don't know much about this, but its a CYMA 042 AK β model. So its of the new generation but it is tiny for your CQB needs. It also has real wood.

ewwwwwww! wow, that is disgusting, 035 or nothing imo!
Its not canon, but it could pass for a little kawaii khyber pass AK... maybe.
Does anybody know if an updated AKS-74U by CYMA is on its way? (I think I read something about that)

If I could be in contact with the magical factory and home to CYMA I would tell you, but honestly they are huge mystery to us, I have to browse every chinese retailer to find such news.

i have the cyma 035 ak-74u and i have no complaints. used it at gt lastsunrise and performed graetly. I don't think i will upgrade it.( it just passed cronoing)but i am still new to the sport so my opinions might change later on

skippy, the updates i stated above increase ROF and accuracy, not FPS. its ok :D
Last update.
I'm not sure I got a dud, but upon a small impact less than a foot off the ground, the stock snapped!
The impact wasn't hard, and it was on snow even. I sincerely hope no one else runs into this issue, but it's something to watch out for.

That's incredibly disappointing for me.

I'm thinking I might get a new metal body, I already have a new wood stock. However, the internals make everything worthwhile.
SACSlym
11-30-2008, 08:58 PM
Metal bodies cost 35 dolla, so no biggy lol.
I should note, I have beaten the shit out of my AKM, and have not had any breaks, so Im thinking its a more solid design then the 47
Maestro
11-30-2008, 09:15 PM
probably

11-30-2008, 11:09 PM
Yeah, the stock on the AKM is a pretty solid hunk O' wood. The standard 47 seems lighter to me.

if you look at the tangs on the AKM youll see its a seperate piece as well.

Ubez, if you know any thing about working with metal poles then maybe you can put little rods on the inside to strengthen it? it could work, couldn't it?;)
Probably could, or buy a replacement stock that can house a larger battery, provided by the internetz.

Way to stay on topic. But, on the AK, I've heard rave reviews from friends on the AK47 as well as the AKS74u. Definately sounds like a solid buy.

I love your avant garde disdain for punctuation and spelling. As for the TM Thompson, it's crap, sell it to me for 20 bucks and cut your losses.
