Cleaning your airsoft gun is simple and will give you better performance and help you avoid many malfunctions and problems.
The supplies you will need are inexpensive and easy to find.

1. Silicone oil airsoft gun lube
2. Cleaning/unjamming rod that comes with your airsoft gun
3. gun cleaning patches

The simplest procedure for cleaning an airsoft gun is to first go over the outside with a damp cloth or sponge and clean away any dirt. Make sure to get in all the cracks and small places and around the sights. Next thread one of the cleaning patches through the end of the cleaning rod with an eye in it. Push it down the barrel in a spiralling motion untill you feel it stop. Clean the barrel by repeating this process untill no more dirt appears on the cleaning patch. Next, do the same with the feeding port in the magazine well.
Once you have cleaned the gun, lubricate it by spraying some silicone lube down the barrel and or into the chamber through the feeding port.

If you push it down until it stops, the you might screw up your hop up. Thats why when you get the cleaning rod from TM or CA, it has a red line on it so you know when to stop and you dont puch the jamming rod through the hop up system.

i wasnt suggesting people push the cleaning rod down on the hopup, i merely meant tp push the cleaning rod down the barrel carefully untill they felt the cleaning rod touch the hopup.

Im just clarifying your statement because someone with little experience will easily push it through the unit if they push it until it stops, cuz a lightly tuned hop up unit wont stop it. LOL

You can also adjust the hopup so that it does not get into the way, which is what i do, but it requires readjustment after each cleaning, which isnt a big deal

you can get silicon oil at lowes or home depot in the electrical section. it'll say electrical grade silicon lubricant, and thats good enough for airsoft.

cleaning patches you can get from sporting good stores with hunting sections

Adjusting your hop-up is easy, I'm assuming you're meaning that after you cleaned the gun you just need to set the hop-up back the way you had it that's just twisting the nob or moving the lever depending on your gun... Also you guys didn't mention this... NO WHITE LITHIUM OR CLP IN THE GUNS! In the shop we run down here in Virginia we get so many kids that think, "Well geez I need to lube my gun why don't I use dad's real-steel stuff?" NO! DON'T DO IT! Have you ever seen the internals of a gearbox melt? :'(

For the cleaning patches, I just take a ratty old white T-shirt, and cut it up into little pieces and use those. Works fine.

The instructions for my gun say that after i shoot i should take out the mag and fire blanks on semi. I was just wondering, does it really do anything? I'm kinda thinking that it keeps the gears working properly, but i'm not really sure.

Kiena

it decompresses the spring so that it will last longer nothing that has to do with the gears, also this thread is kinda old

yes but this is a sticky so it doesn't really matter...and yes kiena is right

Yeah, thanks guys. I dry fired my gun in my house yesterday to see how much battery i had left, so i took out the clip and pulled the trigger. Turned out there was a bb in the chamber, so it bounced off the walls of the room and almost hit me . So yeah, after that i realized another use for it :D. Thanks for answering

I was told to never oil up a gun. One of the biggest causes of gun damage is the atempted maintenance and cleaning of a gun. I was instructed to put bbs and a fully charged battery in and shoot away. that's it.

well thats stupid, ur guns gonna jam cuz barrels do get rather dirty, and internally you gotta clean it also

you never want to use an petroleum based solvent, like WD-40. ONLY use SILICON oil if you use somehting like WD-40, it is know to eat away at plastic, and if it gets on the hop-up it eats away at the hop-up bucking. but you eventually have to lube the barrel, just make sure u use the right stuff.

I didn't mean don't ever clean the dirt out of your gun or wipe it down, I was just saying that I was told most guns don't need to be oiled. Don't kill the messenger!

Its generally easier to tell someone who doesn't know what theyre doing not to do anything at all rather than taking the chance they'll inflict damage on their gun. Oil is fine in the barrel area, I'm not quite sure why anyone would think spraying WD-40 into a gearbox is a good idea, but I've known some pretty stupid people... speaking of which, fire is not a valid solution to a barrel jam.

Youre right Slym, I am new to airsoft. I'm just trying to avoid confusion which in turn may damage my equipment. I do have a bottle of silicone oil. I just held off from using it when I was told not to. But it seems you guys haven't had any problems. Thanks for all the input. peeeace.

I'm new and have had problembs with my gun(in the shop twice). Is it me or is the the production of airsoft guns so new that they have not been engineered wellL You can by a real gun for the same money and you can bet it is safe and works.
And- the airsoft guns are so delicate that the can seriously messed up by an amature just trying to clean it or even trying to use it.
Airsoft is fun though.!

ya I agree, you can get a real gun for the same as some of these airsoft guns and you can hurl it off a tree, but if an airsoft gun slips your grip and falls 3 feet to the ground it could have problems

I have heard that sometimes silicon oil should be applied to magazines, specifically when they are new. Is this a rumor or is there a method to how to do it? I am not talking about oiling the seal on GBB mags , but just putting oil on/in an AEG mag.

Buddha

Skip the silicon oil and put a puff of graphite powder in there.

your gun not only shoots .2 gram bbs, they use ALL 6mm bbs, such as .12, .20, .25, .28, .223246898647567632498 etc.

i dont want to flame you too bad, but how old are you? it is BASIC math to know that .2 is the same as .20 or even .20000000000000000000000000000

i will get some controversy from this but STAY AWAY FROM WALMART AIRSOFT ANYTHING! bounds are it sucks!

try going on websites such as evike.com or airsoftgi.com
there is an airsoft store in western mass, Federal Airsoft. search it on google. Craig is a great guy and will teach you EVERYTHING you need to know.

where can you get silicon lube?

Almost any airsoft website will get you some lube. Or you can check Federal Airsoft.

If you're looking online.

The lube you're getting online is just silicon spray. Any sort of hardware store will also sell it, probably cheaper and you won't have to ship.

i would definitely buy the airsoft inovations silicon lube from evike. it's not a spray and works wonders.

I have put at least 25000 rounds through my ICS MP5 of crossman bbs (from k-mart), and have never had a problem, but they are right. Cheap bb's like these could bite u in the butt. I am just saying that i, nor any of my friends (at least 60,000 rounds through other various guns) have never had problems with them.

I've run through at least 70k crosmans with an old echo I once had. Once you get something like a KWA with a 6.05 barrel your crosmans will jam like every other shot. AE/Matrix is the way to go with higher end guns.

TSD's aren't half-bad either. 10,000+ rounds in my tightbore KWA M4 (6.03 Black Python) and no jams, ever.

Gunny
10-19-2009, 08:24 PM
well most of my crossmans went through my madbull 6.03 tightbore, just saying. but ya, go with higher end bbs anyways. they are like 2 extra bucks and u get peice of mind.

mike.m
10-19-2009, 11:35 PM
i use to use the cheap walmart bbs all the time, once i upgraded my weapon they jammed like crazy. But like he just said atleast with the better quality rounds you get a better piece of mind. you'd rather have them and not need them, than need them and not have them

I'd listen to the other suggestions in this thread. Stick with AE's, Matrix, G&G, etc. Stay away from the stuff you get in Wallmart, Kmart, Dicks, etc. most of those are shit bb's and will destroy any decent gun.

Is there any way to know when to stop putting the cleaning rod in? Because when I did it, I messed up my hop up and am worried about doing it again. Maybe comparing barrel length vs. rod length then marking?

These aren't walmart bb's or anything. I was looking on Evike and I saw a 5k pack of AIM TOP for $10 so I thought it was a good deal but haven't purchased yet.
